Daily Show's John Oliver gets own six part special

The second funniest guy on The Daily Show named John is finally getting his own corner of Comedy Central's airspace.

John Oliver has been tapped by the network to do a six part stand-up series cleverly titled John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show. The specials will feature Oliver's signature stand-up as well as performances from his personal favorite comedians including Janeane Garofalo, Brian Posehn, Paul F. Tompkins and fellow Daily Show correspondent Kristen Schaal.

This is bound to be a real treat. If you haven't seen Oliver's stand-up either in person or from the comfort of your living room, you are missing out on some quality, edgy satire. His first special, Terrifying Times, was a real eye opener on American culture, politics and media. It should have been by the CIA as evidence to put Domino's on the "no fly" list (if you saw his special, that makes more sense, sort of).

What You Missed Last Night: Jon Stewart, the ball, and the stick

It's the holiday season, and for the kids that probably means toys. Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart had a bone to pick with the National Toy Hall of Fame and the criteria to use when they choose toys to be inducted. Stick got in the hall before ball?

Hannity gets caught by Jon Stewart ... and apologizes?!?

Hannity, Jon Stewart
Once again people, I'm forced to ask the obvious question: what the hell is going on here? Have we crossed over into the bizarro world? Is up now down? Has black become white? Did Lou Dobbs just announce that he's leaving CNN to take over the host chair of G4's Attack of the Show?

The other day, Jon Stewart called out Sean Hannity and his self titled show for what appeared to be doctored footage of Michelle Bachmann's recent health care rally dubbed the "Super Bowl of Freedom" (does that have anything to do with the Tostidos Fiesta Bowl of Human Rights?) spliced together with images from Glenn Beck's "9/12 Rally" to make the crowd look bigger.

Jon Stewart explains Fox News

Whatever your political opinions are and however your cable news tastes run, you have to admit that this Daily Show examination of how Fox News works is pretty smart. Not just as an explanation at how the news side works with the non-news side of the network, but as an explanation of how any organization can spin things their way.

The Shake Weight is either the most erotic or hilarious exercise ad ever

Tuesday's Daily Show with Jon Stewart brought a pressing and shocking concern to my eyes, something the American people as a whole have largely ignored: the ridiculous ad for the Shake Weight.

Most exercise infomercials are already crazy and unintentionally hilarious in and of themselves, but this ad deserves the Mark Twain Prize.

What You Missed Last Night: CNN will have to leave it there

I've never noticed how often the hosts at CNN - almost all of them - say the phrase "we'll have to leave it there" when they run out of time when interviewing a guest. But The Daily Show noticed it, and last night they were all over CNN about it.

What You Missed Last Night: Jon and Blago

It must be odd for someone who has been ridiculed and talked about so much on a talk show to then be on that talk show as a guest. Whether you're Bill Clinton on The Late Show with David Letterman or Rod Blagojevich on The Daily Show last night, it must be weird for both the guest and the host.

In this clip (which Jon Stewart gives a special introduction to because the interview went long and got weird), Jon and Blago talk about a range of issues, starting with his hair. (Unedited interview here.)

What You Missed Last Night: Scoldplay

Are you sick of the whole Representative Joe Wilson controversy yet? Were you sick of it four or five days ago? Jon Stewart and The Daily Show are too, and last night they showed how the people asking for an apology from Wilson are being hypocritical, and how both sides do this all the time and then ask for an apology when the other side does it.

In other words, politics really suck.

What You Missed Last Night: The Audacity of Hos

If you've been watching television over the summer, you probably know about the Glenn Beck/FOX News investigation into the ACORN organization. Recently two young college students went undercover at one of the organization's offices and tried to get money for their prostitution ring. Last night Jon Stewart and The Daily Show had a very funny piece on it. (Video also here.)

They've come up with great titles for segments, but "The Audacity of Hos" is one of their best.

Lewis Black on his new special, The Daily Show, and the Root of All Evil

Lewis BlackFor thirteen years, Lewis Black has been ranting and raving as a correspondent for The Daily Show, venting about all things political and pop cultural. For much longer than that, he's been a an actor, a playwright, and stand-up comedian, playing clubs and theaters everywhere around the country.

He taped his latest special, Stark Raving Black, earlier this month in Detroit for a fall release in theaters October 8th before it heads to a new premium HB cable channel called Epix, where it will debut December 5. (Black also filmed a documentary about his transition from a writer to a comedian - he's unsure where that will end up). And Big Bang Theory fans will be happy to know he'll be doing a cameo on the show September 28. I spoke with him by phone last week.

Why release the new special theatrically?

In order to... I think... I've got no idea. Everyone around me seemed to think it was a smart idea. Why not? I'm interested in seeing how that works and if it does work. It's another way to reach people.

Comedy Central fans would take a bullet for their network

Stephen Colbert in IraqWe often hear the phrase "die hard fan," but who is actually willing to "die hard" for the thing they care most about?

If you believe in statistics, that honor would go to fans of Comedy Central.

A recent study conducted by a research group found that fans of the long-running cable network have the most dedicated fan base. Plus, those polled think people who watch The Colbert Report and The Daily Show are "cool." Are the kids these days still saying "cool"? My, where has all the time gone?

Bill O'Reilly answers Jon Stewart

Yesterday, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show had a little fun with FOX News, saying the way that they're covering the town hall protests makes them sound like liberals. Well, last night, Bill O'Reilly turned the tables on Stewart and gave him a little bit of his own medicine. You decide who's being more fair and balanced.

[via TV Newser]

Why does cable news have to be so stupid?

Earlier today I posted a video from last night's Daily Show where Jon Stewart took FOX News to task for flip-flopping on their coverage of protestors. But let's be fair. Here's Stewart from the night before, dumping on CNN for their ridiculous new segments.

What You Missed Last Night: FOX News hosts are the new liberals

While I don't agree that most people get their news from The Daily Show or that it's more important than the news, I think it is must see TV because it's usually going to show you something in a way you've never seen before, and it will change the way that you watch news (whether it's FOX News or MSNBC, it doesn't matter). That's a good thing.

Like last night's summary of how one network is presenting news of town hall confrontations and how they compare to what has happened in the past.

94% of people polled aren't sure what they think of polls

If I was to make a list of ten things I hate on television, I think polls would be one of them. The news channels (cable and local news) are always asking us to text or call in with our opinion on some poll question. But you can't believe the numbers, as Jon Stewart showed last night on The Daily Show. (Video also here.)
